Guest post written by Taylor Hovik
My stepson is 9 years old and for a few years he has enjoyed watching his dad and I play games online. One of us would allow him to go to websites designed for young children but only while we watched.
This year he got his own laptop so we immediately understood that supervision would become more challenging. We have a few computers in our home connected to satellite internet arizona.
The first thing we did to introduce satalite internet to our son was to ask him which websites he frequented so that we had an idea of what content he enjoyed. We then utilized the child locks on his laptop to allow those websites he listed and to block websites designed for adults.
It was important that our son also knew that the internet while filled with regular people like me and you also has bad people who try to take advantage of children. Just like in real life, it is forbidden that he chats with strangers. We talked to him about online safety and how to alert one of us if he is approached.
Another thing we taught him was about viruses and how certain websites and applications could harm the computer. We are confident that between the built in security and the talk we had with him, his online experience should be safe.
